The Extrusion Scrap Challenge
Extrusion scrap comes in two very different forms. The first is the routine stream: edge trims, pipe and profile offcuts, cutting-station waste and the off-spec product made during every start-up and grade change — metres of pipe, sheet or profile produced before the line reaches dimension. The second is the hard stuff: purge lumps. Every shutdown, colour change and screen change pushes molten polymer out of the die, and it cools into solid blocks that can weigh anywhere from a few kilograms to tens of kilograms each.
Those purgings are the reason extrusion plants struggle with reprocessing. Feed a solid PE or PVC lump into a blade granulator and you will break blades — the material is simply too dense and too thick for a high-speed cutting chamber. So purge collects in a corner of the plant, off-spec pipe stacks up along the wall, and a dealer eventually carries away material that was bought as virgin resin at a fraction of its value. For pipe, profile and sheet plants in India, the missing machine is a shredder ahead of the grinder.
Two-Stage Reprocessing — Shred First, Then Grind
Stage one is the S3-600 single shaft shredder. Its 600 × 1000 mm side-feeding hopper takes purge lumps, pipe offcuts and folded trims as they are; the rotor turns at a slow, high-torque 80 rpm and bites material progressively against 26 hardened rotary blades and two fixed blades, inside a heavy-walled chamber. The 22 kW drive shreds 300–500 kg/hr depending on material density, and the all-metal machine is built to run continuously for 24 hours. Slow and strong is exactly what solid lumps need — no blade-type granulator survives them.
Stage two is an RE-series plastic grinder, which takes the coarse shred from the S3-600 and cuts it against a mesh screen into uniform, dosable regrind — the form your extruder hopper actually wants. Plants running anywhere from 35 to 1,200 kg/hr of reground scrap pick the grinder model to match. The routine stream of trims and thin offcuts can skip stage one and go straight into the grinder; the shredder is there for everything the grinder cannot touch. Together the two machines turn the purge corner and the off-spec stack back into raw material for non-critical layers and products.

Why can’t I feed purge lumps straight into a granulator?
Because a granulator is a high-speed cutting machine designed for thin-walled scrap. A solid purge lump presents a thick, dense cross-section that the blades cannot bite into cleanly — the result is shock-loaded, chipped or broken blades and a stalled rotor. A single shaft shredder works the opposite way: a slow 80 rpm rotor with high torque takes small progressive bites out of the lump until it is reduced to pieces a grinder can handle safely. That is why hard extrusion scrap is always a two-stage job.
How big a purge lump or offcut can the S3-600 take?
The side-feeding hopper opening is 600 × 1000 mm, with a 650 × 600 mm cutting chamber below it — large enough for the purge blocks and head drainage that a typical pipe or sheet line produces, loaded manually or by trolley. Long pipes and profiles are sawn into hopper-length sections first; that is normal practice and takes minutes. If your purgings are exceptionally large, send us photos with dimensions and we will confirm fit before you visit for a trial.
Do I need both the shredder and the grinder, or just one?
It depends on your scrap mix. If your waste is mostly thin trims, small offcuts and off-spec product with thin walls, an RE-series grinder alone may cover you. If you generate purge lumps, thick-wall pipe offcuts or solid blocks, you need the S3-600 ahead of it — and if you only need coarse shred (for example, to sell to a reprocessor), the shredder alone may be enough. Many plants phase the purchase: shredder first to clear the purge backlog, grinder second to close the loop in-house.
Can reground extrusion scrap go back into my product?
Clean, polymer-segregated regrind from your own line is high-quality feedstock — it is your own resin with one extra heat history. Most extrusion plants dose it at a controlled ratio into middle layers of multilayer pipe and sheet, into non-pressure or non-critical products, or blend it down gradually across production. Standards matter here: pressure-pipe specifications limit rework content, so check the relevant IS standard for your product class. What regrind never does is improve by waiting — reprocess it before it picks up dirt.
Can the shredder handle PVC pipe scrap as well as PE and PP?
Yes — the S3-600 shreds rigid PVC pipe and profile offcuts along with HDPE, PP and other polymers; the machine also takes wood, paper and FRP, so one shredder can serve mixed plant waste streams (shredded separately, never blended). Keep PVC strictly segregated from polyolefins for reprocessing, since even small cross-contamination ruins both streams. What does an extrusion purge shredder cost in India?

The machine is built for continuous duty — all-metal construction with no plastic parts, heavy-plate chamber walls, and hardened tool-steel blades. Routine care is straightforward: keep the cutting chamber clean, lubricate as scheduled, and have blades attended to periodically depending on running hours and material abrasiveness.
