Laminate Shredder Machine for Multi-Layer Packaging & Lamitubes
Printed laminate reels, pouch rejects, slitting trims and toothpaste-style lamitubes — destroy them securely and cut their volume before they leave your plant. Dedicated laminate shredders from a Mumbai builder trusted by FMCG and packaging names since 1985.
The Laminate Waste Problem in FMCG and Packaging Converting
Multi-layer laminate is the workhorse of Indian FMCG packaging — biscuit wrappers, shampoo sachets, detergent pouches, gutkha-style pillow packs, tea and snack laminates, and the PE-aluminium lamitubes used for toothpaste, cosmetics and ointments. The same structure that protects the product makes the waste stubborn: a printing and converting plant generates a constant stream of misprinted reels, slitting trims, lamination rejects and pouch-line startup waste, while brand owners accumulate expired and obsolete printed stock that legally and commercially cannot just be sold as scrap.
Printed laminate is a brand security risk while it exists — intact wrappers and tubes leaving a plant whole are raw material for counterfeiters. It is also squarely in the regulator’s sights: multilayer plastic packaging carries EPR obligations under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, so brand owners need documented collection and processing routes, not an informal dumping arrangement. Shredding answers both: reels and tubes are destroyed beyond reuse on your own premises, and the shredded output — compact and handleable — moves into recognised MLP end uses such as cement plant co-processing, energy recovery and road construction through registered channels.
The Right Shredding Approach for Laminates and Lamitubes
Laminate is tough, flexible and layered — it resists clean cutting and tends to wrap around high-speed rotors. The right tool is a dual shaft shredder: two slow, high-torque blade shafts grip the material and tear it into strips without wrapping. Raj Electricals builds a dedicated Laminate Shredder Machine for exactly this stream, part of a laminates waste shredder and grinder range that has served India’s printing and packaging industry for decades. Reels can be fed whole or in bundles, pouches in sacks, and lamitubes in cartons — contact us for the detailed specifications and the model sized to your volumes.
For mixed packaging waste streams our dual shaft shredders — also rated for laminates waste and printing and packaging industry waste — run continuously for 24 hours, while the RE20 plastic waste machine offers a 20″ × 20″ throat single-rotor alternative for size reduction at 250–400 kg/hr. For rejected filled lamitubes, Raj Electricals also builds squeezing and product-recovery machines — see the liquid pouch squeezing & recovery machine — that recover the product before the packaging is destroyed; ask about the lamitube version if your reject stream is filled rather than empty. On customized builds, shred size can be defined by mesh from 1 mm to 30 mm or more, and SS-grade construction is available on request.
Laminate Shredding Process — From Printed Reels to Documented Disposal
- Segregation & logging Misprinted reels, trims, pouch rejects and obsolete stock are segregated and quantities logged for records
- Core & metal removal Steel reel cores, clips and strapping are removed — only the laminate enters the chamber
- Dual shaft shredding Slow, high-torque shafts tear reels, pouches and lamitubes into strips that cannot be reused
- Optional secondary grinding Where the offtaker needs smaller, uniform pieces, a grinder reduces strips further by mesh size
- Compaction & bagging Shredded laminate packs dense — a fraction of the original reel and carton volume
- Dispatch to MLP end uses Output moves to registered channels — co-processing, energy recovery or road construction routes

Frequently Asked Questions
Can multi-layer laminates actually be recycled, or only destroyed?
Multilayer plastic cannot be melted back into a single clean polymer the way PET or HDPE can — but it has recognised end-of-life routes in India: co-processing as fuel in cement kilns, energy recovery, and use in road construction, all of which require the material in shredded, handleable form. That is the practical meaning of laminate recycling today, and it is what EPR documentation for MLP is built around. The shredder is the gateway step: it converts unwieldy reels and cartons of rejects into a stream a registered offtaker will actually accept.
Why do FMCG companies insist on shredding printed laminate instead of selling it as scrap?
Because intact printed laminate is counterfeit raw material. A reel of misprinted wrappers or a carton of obsolete sachet film carries your brand, your batch formats and your artwork — in the wrong hands it packages fake product that lands in the market under your name. Shredding on your own premises, before the material leaves your custody, removes that risk completely. It also reduces volume dramatically, which cuts disposal transport cost, and produces the documented destruction trail your audit and EPR teams need.
Can toothpaste tubes and other lamitubes be shredded — including filled ones?
Empty lamitubes — production rejects, expired stock with product removed — shred readily in the laminate shredder. For filled rejected tubes, Raj Electricals has built a Lami Tube Squeezing and Product Recovery Machine: it recovers the product (which often has salvage or disposal value of its own) before the tube goes for destruction. Whether squeezing-plus-shredding or direct shredding suits you depends on your reject volumes and what the recovered product is worth — describe your stream in your enquiry and we will recommend the configuration.
Laminate wraps around our existing granulator’s rotor — why is a dual shaft different?
High-speed single-rotor machines rely on clean cutting, and flexible laminate refuses to be cut cleanly — it stretches, folds and winds itself around the rotor until the machine stalls. A dual shaft shredder works on the opposite principle: two slow shafts with interlocked blades grip the material between them and tear it through. There is nothing for the laminate to wrap around, and the high torque at low speed handles bundled reels and compressed pouches without drama. That is why the laminates waste shredder range is dual shaft by design.
What shred size do MLP offtakers require, and can the machine produce it?
It varies by route — cement co-processors and energy-recovery plants each specify their own acceptable size, so confirm with your offtaker before finalising the machine. The dual shaft stage produces strips; where smaller, more uniform pieces are required, a secondary machine like the RE20 plastic waste machine reduces them further, and on customized builds the output size can be defined by mesh from 1 mm to 30 mm or more. Tell us your offtaker’s specification and we will size the line to deliver it.
What does a laminate shredder machine cost in India?
Every machine is quoted to the job. What moves the number is capacity, throat size, motor rating, MS or SS construction and the automation you add — a blower, a conveyor, a control panel. Our guide to what drives machine cost walks through each of those; send us your material and daily volume and we will size the machine and quote it, usually the same day.
Our laminate waste volume varies month to month — how should we size the machine?
Size for your steady converter stream, not the occasional obsolete-stock purge. Trims and misprints arrive predictably with production; expired stock arrives in lumps a few times a year. A machine sized to clear your monthly steady stream in comfortable shifts will also clear a purge in a few extra days — that is cheaper than owning idle capacity year-round. Weigh a typical month’s reject laminate, share the figure along with your purge volumes, and our machine selection guide approach will land you on the right model.
Can we witness the destruction of our material — and trial before buying?
Yes to both. Before purchase, bring or courier sample reels, pouches or tubes to our works at Andheri East, Mumbai for a live or recorded trial — you see exactly what the shred looks like and how fast your material processes. After installation, shredding happens inside your own plant under your team’s supervision, which is precisely the point: the material is destroyed before it ever leaves your custody. Contact us to arrange a trial slot.
