ABS Plastic Shredder & Grinder Machine for Recycling

Appliance housings, automotive trim, electronics enclosures — shred bulky ABS at 300–500 kg/hr on a single shaft shredder, then grind it into clean, mould-ready regrind. Machines built in Mumbai since 1985.

The ABS Plastic Waste Challenge

ABS is the workhorse of India’s durable-goods industry: washing machine panels, air-conditioner and cooler housings, television and monitor casings, vacuum cleaner bodies, luggage shells, helmets, toys — plus automotive grilles, dashboards and interior trim, and the enclosures around practically every electronic device. Wherever appliances are made, repaired or dismantled, rejected and end-of-life ABS piles up. The parts are rigid, bulky and awkwardly shaped, they refuse to stack, and many carry metal inserts, screws and fasteners that have to come out before any cutting machine sees them.

The real story with ABS, though, is the money left on the table. ABS is an engineering plastic, not a commodity — sorted, clean ABS regrind typically commands far better rates than mixed plastic scrap, and molders routinely blend it back into production. Selling whole housings as unsorted scrap, or paying to dispose of them, hands that margin to whoever owns a shredder. Add EPR obligations on e-waste and plastic packaging, and processing ABS in-house moves from “nice to have” to a straightforward business case.

The Right Shredding Approach for ABS

For bulky housings and thick mouldings, the proven route is two-stage: shred first, grind second. The S3-600 single shaft shredder takes large ABS parts through its 600 × 1000 mm side-feeding hopper and reduces them at a slow, high-torque 80 rpm — 26 hardened rotary blades working against 2 fixed blades inside a heavy-walled chamber. Capacity is 300–500 kg/hr depending on material density, and the machine is built to run continuously for 24 hours.

The shredded ABS then goes to an RE-series plastic grinder machine, where a five-blade rotor cuts it against a screen into uniform regrind sized for molding or pelletizing. Seven grinder models cover 3–75 HP and 35–1,200 kg/hr, so the grinding stage scales with your volumes — and the largest models (RE25 to RE40) accept any plastic part below 25″–40″, which means smaller ABS trim and enclosures can go straight into the grinder without primary shredding. One discipline matters above all with ABS: strip metal inserts, screws and wiring before feeding. Metal entering the cutting chamber breaks blades. Machines are built in MS with SS-grade construction available, and export orders are supplied with motors matched to your country’s voltage and frequency.

ABS Shredding Process — From Housing to Regrind

  1. Dismantling & metal removal Screws, metal inserts, motors and wiring are stripped out — metal in the chamber breaks blades
  2. Sorting by grade & colour ABS is separated from PP, HIPS and blends; colour-sorted lots fetch better regrind prices
  3. Primary shredding Bulky housings go through the S3-600 single shaft shredder at 300–500 kg/hr
  4. Secondary grinding Shred is reduced to uniform, screen-controlled regrind in an RE-series plastic grinder
  5. Inspection & bagging Regrind is checked for contamination and bagged by grade and colour
  6. Reuse or sale Clean ABS regrind is blended back into molding or sold to compounders and recyclers

Recommended Machines for ABS Plastic Shredding

A two-stage pair: single shaft shredder for the bulky parts, plastic grinder for the final regrind. Full spec tables live on each machine page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ABS plastic recyclable, and is the regrind actually reusable?

Yes on both counts. ABS is a thermoplastic, so it can be shredded, ground and remelted. Molders across India routinely blend clean ABS regrind with virgin granule for housings, trim and non-cosmetic parts. The keys to reusability are sorting (keep ABS separate from PP and HIPS), colour discipline, and contamination control — which is why the process starts with dismantling and segregation, not at the shredder. Sorted, clean ABS regrind is one of the better-paying recycled plastics in the market.

What ABS items can these machines handle?

The S3-600 single shaft shredder takes bulky rigid parts through its 600 × 1000 mm side hopper — washing machine panels, AC and cooler housings, monitor casings, luggage shells, toys and automotive trim, plus ABS lumps and purgings. The RE-series grinder handles shredded material and smaller parts directly; the application chart for the largest models covers any plastic part below 25″ (RE25), 30″ (RE30) or 40″ (RE40). If you have an unusually large or thick part, send us a photo with dimensions — or better, bring it for a trial.

Do I need both the shredder and the grinder, or will a grinder alone do?

It depends on part size and what your buyer wants. If your ABS waste is small — trim pieces, enclosures, sprues — a suitably sized RE-series grinder alone produces saleable regrind. If you handle full appliance housings or thick mouldings, you need the S3-600’s torque and hopper first, with the grinder as stage two for uniform output. Buyers who only need volume reduction (for transport to a recycler) sometimes stop at the shredding stage entirely.

How do I deal with metal inserts and screws in appliance ABS?

Remove them before feeding — this is non-negotiable. Metal objects entering the cutting chamber break blades, and a broken blade set means downtime plus replacement cost. Practical dismantling lines use powered screwdrivers and a magnet check at the feeding table. The discipline pays for itself: blade sets last longer, regrind stays metal-free, and metal-free lots fetch better prices from compounders who run regrind through their own metal detectors.

What regrind size can I get, and can it match my molder’s requirement?

Grinder output is screen-controlled: material stays in the cutting chamber until it passes the mesh, so regrind size is consistent lot after lot. Screens are replaceable and can be customised to your buyer’s specification — Raj Electricals builds customized machines and screen sizes against client requirements. Tell us the granule size your molder or compounder asks for and we will configure the grinder accordingly, then prove it in a trial on your own material.

Can the same machines handle PC-ABS blends and other engineering plastics?

Mechanically, blends like PC-ABS are rigid thermoplastics in the same family of cutting behaviour, and the same shredder-plus-grinder route applies — we recommend confirming with a trial run on your specific parts, since wall thickness and fillers affect throughput. Note that for regrind value, blends should be kept separate from pure ABS lots; mixing them downgrades both. For pure polycarbonate parts, see our dedicated polycarbonate grinding solution.

How much does an ABS plastic shredder machine cost in India?

Every machine is quoted to the job. What moves the number is capacity, throat size, motor rating, MS or SS construction and the automation you add — a blower, a conveyor, a control panel. Our guide to what drives machine cost walks through each of those; send us your material and daily volume and we will size the machine and quote it, usually the same day.

Can I see my own ABS parts shredded before I buy?

Yes — bring a sample lot of your actual housings or trim to our works at Andheri East, Mumbai, and we will run a live trial so you can check throughput, shred quality and regrind size yourself. For outstation buyers we arrange video trials on your material. Machines are supported pan-India with spares and service from Mumbai, and export orders are built with motors matched to your country’s voltage. Contact us to book a trial slot.
